Short answer
For marriage, Rahu-Ketu (sarpa) dosha means Rahu or Ketu sits in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th house, counted from the lagna, or from the Moon when the birth time is unknown. About one chart in three has it. Tradition balances it by matching with a chart that has it too, so it is weighed, not feared.

Rahu-Ketu dosha, also called sarpa dosha or naga dosha, is a check on each birth chart, not on the star pair: it asks whether Rahu or Ketu sits in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th house. Because the two nodes always sit exactly opposite each other, about one chart in three has it, so it is ordinary rather than rare. In marriage matching it is balanced the same way as Mangal dosha: a chart that has it is matched with a chart that has it too.
What is Rahu-Ketu dosha (sarpa dosha)?
Rahu and Ketu are not visible planets. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, the lunar nodes, and Jyotisha counts them as shadow planets (chhaya grahas). They are always 180 degrees apart, which means always six signs apart. They move backwards through the zodiac and stay about a year and a half in each sign.
In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, families look at where the two nodes fall in each chart before a marriage. It is not one of the 10 poruthams, and it is not one of the eight kootas of the 36-point Gun Milan. Like Mangal dosha, it is a chart dosha: found in each person's chart on its own, then compared. That is why a couple can get a good kundli matching result and still be asked, "Did you check Rahu-Ketu?"
Which houses are checked?
The rule our WhatsApp service and our free checker use: Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th house, counted from the lagna. When the birth time is unknown, the lagna cannot be calculated, so the houses are counted from the Moon sign instead.
Why these four? In tradition the 1st house is the self and the body, the 2nd is family and speech, the 7th is the spouse and the marriage, and the 8th, the mangalya sthana, is the continuance of married life. The nodes are believed to unsettle the house they occupy, so the houses tied to marriage are the ones checked.
Because Rahu and Ketu are always opposite, Rahu in the 1st means Ketu in the 7th, and Rahu in the 2nd means Ketu in the 8th. So the rule really asks one question: does the Rahu-Ketu axis fall on the 1-7 axis or the 2-8 axis?
| Rahu in house | Ketu in house | Rahu-Ketu dosha? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 | Yes |
| 7 | 1 | Yes |
| 2 | 8 | Yes |
| 8 | 2 | Yes |
| 3, 4, 5 or 6 | 9, 10, 11 or 12 | No |
| 9, 10, 11 or 12 | 3, 4, 5 or 6 | No |
How common is Rahu-Ketu dosha?
The node axis can fall on six axes, and two of them (1-7 and 2-8) count, so roughly one chart in three. In our sample of 3000% birth charts, calculated with the same rules as the free checker, Rahu or Ketu fell in a counted house in 32% of charts.
Simple arithmetic follows from that. If each person has about a one-in-three chance, then in roughly one couple in nine both charts have it, in four neither does, and in four only one does. A one-sided Rahu-Ketu dosha is one of the most ordinary results in matching. It is not a reason to drop a good proposal on the spot.
When is Rahu-Ketu dosha balanced?
The main cancellation is balance, the idea of dosha balance (dosha samya): when the other chart has the same dosha, the two are said to balance each other. Our proposal check looks at Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu dosha separately, in both charts.
| Bride's chart | Groom's chart | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Absent | Absent | Balanced: nothing to discuss |
| Present | Present | Balanced: the two charts balance each other |
| Present | Absent | Not balanced: weighed with the full match |
| Absent | Present | Not balanced: weighed with the full match |
"Not balanced" is not "rejected". When only one chart has it, it is read together with the 10 poruthams (above all Rajju and Vedha), the 7th house and its lord in both charts, Venus and Jupiter, the running dasha (a Rahu or Ketu dasha in particular), and Mangal dosha on each side.
Some families, especially those who follow Kerala's papa samyam, count the malefics together (Mars, Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu), so Mars in the 7th of one chart can offset Rahu in the 7th of the other. Some books also say there is no dosha when Rahu or Ketu is in certain signs, but those lists differ from book to book. Our checker applies none of these sign exceptions, so the result on the site is always the result in the chat.

How does it work on real charts?
The planet positions below come from real dates in the 1990s and were checked with the same rules as the free checker. They do not describe any real person.
Bride: Kanya lagna, Moon in Simha, Rahu in Kanya, Ketu in Meena. From the lagna, Rahu is in the 1st and Ketu in the 7th. Rahu-Ketu dosha is present.
Groom A: Kanya lagna, Moon in Tula, Rahu in Tula, Ketu in Mesha. From the lagna, Rahu is in the 2nd and Ketu in the 8th. Present. Both charts have it, so the pair is balanced. Rahu-Ketu is not an obstacle here; the decision rests on the poruthams and the rest of the two charts.
Groom B: Mithuna lagna, Moon in Simha, Rahu in Kanya, Ketu in Meena. From the lagna, Rahu is in the 4th and Ketu in the 10th. No dosha. With the bride it is one-sided, so it is not balanced and is weighed with the full match.
Now suppose Groom B does not know his birth time. Without a lagna, the houses are counted from his Moon in Simha: Rahu is in the 2nd and Ketu in the 8th. The answer flips to "present", and the pair flips to "balanced". Same person, same planets; only the birth time differs. This is why we always ask for the exact birth time when it is available. See matching without a birth time.
Is it the same as Kaal Sarp dosha?
No. Kaal Sarp dosha usually means something different: all seven planets lying on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. It is not part of classical marriage matching in the texts we follow, and it is not what the matching rule above looks at. If someone uses the name to frighten your family into an expensive ritual, you can safely say no.
Why do astrologers give different answers?
- Counted from where: some count only from the lagna, some from both the lagna and the Moon, and some in Kerala from Venus too. Our service uses the lagna when the time is known and the Moon when it is not.
- Which houses: some add the 4th, the 5th (children) or the 12th; some count only the 7th and 8th.
- Rahu or Ketu: some count only Rahu in the 7th or 8th, and some treat Ketu as milder.
- North India: the check is often not done separately. There, Gun Milan and Mangal dosha carry most of the weight. Read Gun Milan or 10 poruthams?
So when two astrologers give different answers for the same chart, first ask which rule each one used.
What does it mean for your marriage?
Rahu-Ketu dosha is guidance, not a guarantee of anything, good or bad. A sensible order:
- Check your own chart. The free Mangal dosha checker shows the Rahu-Ketu line under the Mangal result, with the houses named.
- Check the other chart too. One chart alone cannot decide a match.
- If both have it, that is balance. If only one has it, read it with the 10 poruthams and Gun Milan, Rajju, Vedha and both 7th houses.
- Keep fear out of it. No costly puja or remedy is needed to decide, and Navatara never sells one. If your family wishes to visit a temple such as Thirunageswaram or Srikalahasti, that is a personal choice, not a condition.
For a real proposal, send both horoscopes or birth details to your personal astrologer on WhatsApp. You get Rahu-Ketu and Mangal dosha in both charts, dosha balance (dosha samya), the 10 poruthams, Rajju and Vedha, and a clear answer with the reasons. No need to go anywhere; we are always here for your help. Talking first is free, and you pay only when sure: a proposal check is ₹199, all taxes included (see all prices). If marriage itself is getting delayed, the marriage timing reading looks at that separately.
Questions families ask
Can a person with Rahu-Ketu dosha marry someone without it? Yes. Tradition prefers balance, but a one-sided dosha is not a reason to reject a proposal. Decide with the full match, both 7th houses and the running dasha.
Rahu in the 7th house: will the marriage be delayed? Not necessarily. The 7th house is read with its lord, Venus, Jupiter and the running dasha; Rahu there is one factor among several. See when will I get married? and marriage delay in astrology.
Is there a cancellation for Rahu-Ketu dosha? The main one is balance: the other chart has it too. Some books add sign-based exceptions; because those lists vary, our checker does not apply them.
Is Rahu-Ketu dosha worse than Mangal dosha? Neither needs fear. Both are common, both are checked in both charts, and both are balanced by the same principle.
Does Rahu-Ketu dosha go away with age? The positions in the birth chart never change. What changes is the running dasha and antardasha, which are read for the timing of marriage. Some families believe the dosha weakens with age; that is not a rule we apply.
Can it be checked without the birth time? Partly. The houses are then counted from the Moon, and as the example above shows, the answer can change once the time is known.
