Short answer
Dosha samya (dosha samyam in Tamil) means the doshas in the bride's and groom's charts balance each other. Navatara's proposal check compares Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu dosha: each one is balanced when it is present in both charts or absent in both. A dosha cancelled by a classical exception counts as absent.

Dosha samya means the doshas of two charts balance each other: when the bride's and groom's charts carry the same dosha, or both are free of it, that dosha is balanced. Navatara's proposal check compares two doshas, Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu dosha, in both charts, and a dosha cancelled by a classical exception counts as absent. A dosha present on only one side is weighed with the full match, never treated as an automatic no.
What is dosha samya?
"Samya" means equality or balance. In marriage matching, dosha samya is the old principle that a dosha is not judged in one chart alone. A chart with Mars in a sensitive house is read beside the other chart, and if the other chart carries the same kind of placement, the two are said to balance. This is why families have long looked for a manglik partner for a manglik.
It is a separate step from the star-based checks. The 36-point Gun Milan of North India and the 10 poruthams of South India both compare only the two birth stars and Moon signs. Neither counts Mangal dosha or the nodes. Dosha samya looks at the full charts: the lagna, the Moon and where Mars, Rahu and Ketu sit. So it needs a kundli for each person, not only the star names.
The names differ by region. In Tamil Nadu it is called தோஷ சாம்யம் (dosha samyam), and the word is used both for this simple comparison and for the fuller point count. In Kerala the point count, papasamyam, is the usual form. In North India the same principle is usually spoken of simply as manglik matching.
Which doshas are compared in dosha samya?
Navatara's proposal check compares two. Each is first judged in each chart on its own:
| Dosha | When it counts in a chart | Counted from | Cancelled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal dosha | Mars in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house | the lagna and the Moon (either one is enough) | by any one of the classical exceptions, listed in can a manglik marry a non-manglik? |
| Rahu-Ketu dosha | Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th house | the lagna; the Moon when the birth time is unknown | no cancellation is applied; read Rahu-Ketu dosha and marriage |
For Mangal dosha, each chart gets one of three results: none, cancelled or present. For Rahu-Ketu dosha it is present or none. For dosha samya, only "present" counts: "cancelled" and "none" are treated the same.
Both are common. Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other, so whenever one is in the 1st or 2nd house the other is in the 7th or 8th. In a sample of 3000% birth charts calculated with exactly these rules, Mangal dosha was present after the exceptions in 27.2% of charts, and Rahu-Ketu dosha in 32%. Something that common is a reason to look at the second chart, not a reason for fear. The method is on our editorial standards page.
How is dosha samya checked?
The rule is short. For each of the two doshas, look at both charts:
| Bride's chart | Groom's chart | Result for that dosha |
|---|---|---|
| Absent or cancelled | Absent or cancelled | Balanced: nothing to discuss |
| Present | Present | Balanced: the two charts balance each other |
| Present | Absent or cancelled | Not balanced: weighed with the full match |
| Absent or cancelled | Present | Not balanced: weighed with the full match |
The pair is fully balanced when both doshas are balanced. If Mangal dosha balances but Rahu-Ketu does not, the answer says so line by line, so you see exactly which side carries what.
In steps:
- Judge Mangal dosha in each chart: none, cancelled or present, with the reason.
- Judge Rahu-Ketu dosha in each chart: present or none, with the houses named.
- Treat cancelled as absent.
- Compare each dosha across the two charts using the table above.
- Read the result with everything else: the 10 poruthams with Rajju and Vedha first, both 7th houses and the dasha periods running in both charts.
"Not balanced" is not "rejected". It means the dosha in one chart is read together with the rest of the match. A proposal is never decided by one factor.
How does dosha samya work in a chart? Three examples
These are illustrative charts, worked with the same rules as the free checker. Houses are counted whole-sign, with the starting sign as house 1. In each chart, Jupiter is not with Mars unless stated.
Example 1: both manglik, Rahu-Ketu on one side.
- Bride: lagna Mesha, Moon in Simha, Mars in Tula, Rahu in Vrishabha (so Ketu in Vrischika). Mars is in the 7th from the lagna (the 3rd from the Moon, not counted). Tula is not an exception sign, and only Karka or Makara cancel the 7th: Mangal dosha present. Rahu is in the 2nd and Ketu in the 8th from the lagna: Rahu-Ketu present.
- Groom: lagna Kanya, Moon in Dhanu, Mars in Karka, Rahu in Simha (Ketu in Kumbha). Mars is in the 8th from the Moon (the 11th from the lagna, not counted), and only Dhanu or Meena cancel the 8th: present. Rahu is in the 12th and Ketu in the 6th from the lagna: none.
- Result: Mangal dosha balanced (present in both). Rahu-Ketu not balanced (bride only). The family is told both lines, and the Rahu-Ketu side is weighed with the full match.
Change one thing: if the groom's Rahu were in Meena, the 7th from his lagna (Ketu then in Kanya, his 1st), his Rahu-Ketu would be present too, and the pair would be fully balanced.
Example 2: a cancelled dosha counts as absent.
- Bride: lagna Tula, Mars in Makara, the 4th house. Mars in Makara is exalted, one of the exceptions: cancelled.
- Groom: Mars is not in a counted house from either his lagna or his Moon: none.
- Neither chart has Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th.
- Result: balanced on both lines. Someone who stops at the house count may call her manglik, but for matching her chart is the same as a chart without the dosha.
Example 3: two "manglik" labels that do not balance.
- Groom: lagna Simha, Moon in Tula, Mars in Vrishabha, the 8th from his Moon (and the 10th from his lagna, which is not counted). Vrishabha is not an exception for the 8th, and neither Jupiter nor the Moon is with Mars: present.
- Bride: lagna Kanya, Mars in Simha, the 12th from her lagna. Mars in Simha is an exception: cancelled.
- Neither chart has Rahu or Ketu in a counted house.
- Result: not balanced on the Mangal line. Both families may have been told "manglik", but only one chart actually carries the dosha. This is an easy case to misread, and it is why the reason behind each result matters more than the label.
How is papa samya different, and where do traditions differ?
Papa samya (papasamyam) is the wider form of the same idea, the usual method in Kerala and used by many astrologers in Tamil Nadu too. Instead of two named doshas, it counts malefic planets, usually Mars, Saturn, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu, in sensitive houses of both charts, gives them points and compares the two totals.
The details vary from one book and one family astrologer to the next:
| Question | Common answers |
|---|---|
| Which planets? | Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu almost always; the Sun often, sometimes at a lower weight |
| Which houses? | Usually the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th |
| Counted from where? | The lagna, the Moon, and in many Kerala methods Venus as well, with the lagna counted most heavily |
| What counts as balanced? | Commonly, the groom's total equal to or a little above the bride's; the margin allowed differs |
Because the planets, weights and margins differ, two papa samya counts for the same couple can disagree. Navatara's proposal check does not count papa points. It compares the two named doshas, states the rule it used, and shows the result for each chart. If your family follows papasamyam, ask your family astrologer which planets and weights they count, and compare like with like.
Other points where references differ:
- Which houses make Mangal dosha. Many North Indian references use the 1st instead of the 2nd; some count both. The free checker shows the 1st-house reading as a note.
- Counting from Venus. Some count Mars from Venus too. The checker notes it; the balance rule does not use it.
- Rahu-Ketu houses. Some add the 4th or 12th, or look only at Rahu.
- Whether a cancelled dosha still needs balancing. Some families ask for a manglik partner even when the dosha is cancelled. By the rule we follow, a cancelled dosha counts as absent.
- The age-28 belief. It is not in the rules we apply; see can a manglik marry a non-manglik?.
When two answers disagree, ask which of these rules each one used before worrying.
What does dosha samya mean for your marriage?
Dosha samya is guidance, not a guarantee of anything, good or bad. It is one factor in matching, and matching is one input in a marriage decision, beside the two people, their families and their values. A sensible order:
- Check each chart on its own. Run the free Mangal dosha checker for each person with date, exact time and place of birth. The result shows none, cancelled or present, with the Rahu-Ketu line under it.
- Check the stars. The free kundli matching check gives the 10 poruthams and the Gun Milan total; if you do not know a birth star, the birth star finder gives it. Read Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha if either appears; those are star-pair doshas with their own cancellations, not part of dosha samya.
- Compare the two charts with the four-case table above.
- Keep fear out of it. No costly puja or remedy is needed to decide. Navatara never sells pujas, gemstones or yantras.
For a real proposal, send both horoscopes or birth details to your personal astrologer on WhatsApp. You get Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu dosha in both charts with the reasons, the dosha balance (dosha samya) line by line, the 10 poruthams with Rajju and Vedha, and a clear answer. No need to go anywhere. Talking first is free, and you pay only when sure: a proposal check is ₹199, all taxes included (see all prices). Read checking a proposal horoscope for what to send. If the worry is that marriage itself is getting delayed, the marriage timing reading looks at that separately.
What do families ask about dosha samya?
Is it better for a manglik to marry a manglik? It gives balance, which is why many families prefer it. It is not the only good outcome: when one chart's dosha is cancelled, it counts as absent, and the full match decides.
What is the difference between dosha samya and papa samya? Dosha samya, as the proposal check uses it, compares two named doshas, Mangal and Rahu-Ketu, as present or absent in each chart. Papa samya counts points for several malefic planets in both charts and compares the totals. Same principle, different method.
Does dosha samya include Nadi or Bhakoot dosha? No. Nadi and Bhakoot come from the two birth stars and Moon signs, and have their own cancellations. Dosha samya compares the full charts.
If both charts have Mangal dosha, is the dosha cancelled? For matching, the two balance each other, so the dosha is not held against the pair. Each chart still has Mars where it is, and the rest of the match is read as usual.
Can dosha samya be checked without birth times? Only partly. Without a time, both doshas are judged from the Moon alone, and the answer can change once the lagna is known. Read matching without a birth time.
Is a puja needed when the doshas do not balance? No. An unbalanced dosha is weighed with the full match. If a simple prayer of your choice brings peace of mind, that is a personal choice, never a condition.
