Short answer
Astrology does not give a wedding date; it gives windows of months when marriage is well supported. They are read from the 7th house and its lord, Venus (and Jupiter in a woman's chart), the running dasha and antardasha, and Jupiter's transit (guru bala). Navatara scores the next 36 months and names the strongest stretches.

"When will I get married?" is the question families ask an astrologer most often. An honest astrological answer is never a single date. It is a set of windows, stretches of months when the chart supports marriage, together with the reasons for each one. This guide shows exactly how those windows are found, the same way every time, so you can check the reasoning yourself.
Can marriage be predicted by date of birth alone?
Partly. The date of birth alone gives the Moon sign, usually the nakshatra and the slow transits of Jupiter and Saturn; the birth time adds the ascendant and the exact 7th house and dasha timing, which is what turns a broad period into a usable window.
At what age will I get married?
Astrology does not give an exact age. It gives windows, periods when the dasha and Jupiter's transit both support marriage, and the family's own effort decides which window is used.
What does a horoscope actually look at for marriage timing?
Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika read marriage from a small, well-defined set of factors. Two of them describe the promise (what the chart holds), and two describe the timing (when it is switched on).
| Factor | What it shows | Promise or timing |
|---|---|---|
| The 7th house and its lord | The house of marriage and partnership | Promise |
| Venus, and Jupiter in a woman's chart | The natural significators (karakas) of marriage | Promise |
| Navamsa (D9) chart | The strength of the marriage promise, read by many astrologers | Promise |
| Vimshottari dasha and antardasha | Which planet's period is running now | Timing |
| Jupiter's transit (Guru bala) | Whether the year is supportive from your Moon sign | Timing |
| Saturn's transit (Sade Sati) | Whether the year carries extra weight and delay | Timing |
A planet "connected to marriage", in what follows, means the 7th lord, Venus, any planet sitting in the 7th house, and, in a woman's chart, Jupiter.
Why is the 7th house the starting point?
The 7th house, counted from the lagna (the rising sign at birth), is the house of marriage. Its lord is the planet that rules that sign. For a person with Mesha (Aries) lagna, the 7th sign is Thula (Libra), so Venus is the 7th lord.
The 7th lord, any planets in the 7th, and any planets looking at it (aspecting it) colour both how and when marriage comes. A strong, well-placed 7th lord supports it; a 7th house heavily afflicted by Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu is one of the classical reasons for delay. For more on that, read marriage delay in a horoscope, and for Mars specifically, our Mangal dosha checker.
The lagna changes roughly every two hours, so the 7th house depends on the birth time. When the time is unknown, astrologers count the houses from the Moon sign instead. It still works, but it is less precise.
What do Venus and Jupiter add?
Venus is the karaka (significator) of marriage and partnership in every chart. Traditionally, Jupiter is also read as the significator of the husband in a woman's chart. When their periods run, or when they are strong and well placed, they support marriage, even if they do not rule the 7th house.
What is Navamsa, and how is it used?
The Navamsa (D9) chart divides each sign into nine parts. Parashara lists it among the divisional charts, and in common practice it is read closely for marriage. Many astrologers use it to judge the strength and quality of the marriage promise: the 7th house of the Navamsa, and whether Venus and the 7th lord are strong or weak there.
To be transparent: Navatara's monthly timing score, described below, does not use the Navamsa. Navamsa depends heavily on an exact birth time (it changes every few minutes near a boundary), and it speaks more to promise than to month-by-month timing. We mention it so you know what other astrologers may look at, and why our method leaves it out.
How do dasha and antardasha time a marriage?
The Vimshottari dasha system divides a 120-year life cycle into periods ruled by nine planets, starting from the birth star (nakshatra). Each main period (mahadasha, or dasha) is split into sub-periods (antardasha). Events usually come during the periods of the planets that promise them.
So the core timing rule is simple: marriage is most likely when the running dasha or antardasha belongs to a planet connected to marriage. The antardasha matters a lot because it changes every few months to a few years, which is the scale at which marriages actually happen. The lord of the 2nd house (family) is also given some weight, because marriage adds to the family.
What does Jupiter's transit (guru bala) add?
Jupiter takes about twelve years to pass through the twelve signs, about a year in each. When it moves through the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th sign from your Moon sign, this is called Guru bala, and Muhurta Chintamani treats it as supportive for marriage. When Jupiter transits the 7th house of the birth chart, or aspects it (Jupiter looks at the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from where it sits), that adds support too.
Guru bala alone does not make a marriage happen. It is a supportive year, and it works best when the dasha agrees. See guru bala and marriage timing for a sign-by-sign check.
Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year Sade Sati over the Moon sign is traditionally read as a time of extra effort, so it lowers the score a little. It does not forbid marriage. Read sade sati and marriage.
What is "vivah yog"?
"Vivah yog" (in Tamil, thirumana yogam) is the everyday phrase for "a combination for marriage". People often ask whether their chart "has" vivah yog. In practice almost every chart holds periods that support marriage. The real question is when those factors line up: a marriage-connected dasha or antardasha, a supportive Jupiter, and no heavy pressure at the same time. That overlap is what a timing reading looks for.
How does Navatara score the next 36 months?
The method is published on our How it works page and is the same for every reading. Each of the next 36 months gets a score:
| Factor running in that month | Score |
|---|---|
| The antardasha lord is a planet connected to marriage | +3 |
| The dasha lord is a planet connected to marriage | +2 |
| The 2nd lord runs the dasha or antardasha | +1 |
| Guru bala: Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th from the Moon sign | +2 |
| Jupiter in the 7th house, or aspecting it | +1 |
| Sade Sati running | −1 |
The good periods are the stretches of months that score within two points of the best month and at least 4, up to three of them. The Kalyana Yogam Reading lists them month by month, with the single best month and the reason for each.
A worked example
Take an illustrative chart (not a real person): a woman with Mesha lagna and Moon in Kanni (Virgo).
- Find the marriage planets. The 7th sign from Mesha is Thula, ruled by Venus, so Venus is the 7th lord. Saturn sits in Thula, so Saturn counts too. As this is a woman's chart, Jupiter counts. The 2nd sign, Rishabha, is also ruled by Venus.
- Read the dasha. She is in the Moon dasha. The Moon is not connected to marriage here, so the dasha adds nothing. Its sub-periods run in a fixed order: Rahu, then Jupiter (16 months), then Saturn.
- Read Jupiter. For a Kanni Moon, Guru bala runs when Jupiter is in Thula, Makara, Meena, Rishabha or Kataka. Suppose Jupiter is in Kataka (the 11th from Kanni) for the first 14 months, then about 12 months in Simha (the 12th, no Guru bala), then Kanni (the 1st, no Guru bala either). From none of these signs does Jupiter aspect Thula, her 7th house.
- Check Saturn. Transiting Saturn (not her birth Saturn) is not in Simha, Kanni or Thula, so Sade Sati is not running.
| Months | Running | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 8 | Rahu antardasha + Guru bala | 0 + 2 = 2 |
| 9 to 14 | Jupiter antardasha + Guru bala | 3 + 2 = 5 |
| 15 to 24 | Jupiter antardasha, Jupiter in Simha then Kanni (no Guru bala) | 3 |
| 25 to 36 | Saturn antardasha (Saturn sits in her 7th) | 3 |
The best month scores 5, so the cut-off is 4. Her good period is months 9 to 14, when a marriage-connected sub-period and a supportive Jupiter overlap. Months 15 to 36 are not "bad": they still carry a marriage-connected antardasha, just without Jupiter's extra support. A reading would say exactly that, in plain words.
Will I have a love or arranged marriage?
Traditional texts say a few patterns are linked with a love marriage: a link between the 5th house (romance) and the 7th house (marriage), Venus joined with or aspecting the 7th lord, or Rahu touching the 7th house. A strong 7th house with the family houses (2nd and 4th) involved is read as pointing to an arranged match.
Be careful with this. These are tendencies described in the texts, not rules, and many charts show both patterns. Today many marriages are both: the couple chooses, the families agree. No chart decides this for you. If you want to know what your own chart is said to show, ask in the free first reading on WhatsApp.
Why a window, not a date?
A window says the conditions are supportive. Whether a wedding happens then also depends on people, families, proposals and choices. Anyone who promises an exact date is claiming more than astrology can honestly give. Treat a reading as guidance, not a guarantee: a useful way to plan meetings and conversations, and a calm explanation when things are slow.
How is timing different from kundli matching?
Timing asks when; matching asks with whom. Once a proposal comes, families compare the two charts: North Indian families usually use the 36-point guna milan (Ashtakoot), South Indian families the 10 porutham. Our free kundli matching tool shows both for any two birth stars. Read gun milan vs porutham and how many gunas should match.
Frequently asked questions
Can marriage be predicted from the date of birth alone? Partly. The date gives the birth star, the Moon sign and the dasha sequence, so Guru bala and the sub-periods can be read. The 7th house needs the birth time; without it, houses are counted from the Moon and the answer is less precise. See matching without a birth time.
Does a Jupiter transit over the 7th house guarantee marriage that year? No. It is a supportive transit, worth one point in our score. Marriage is far more likely when it coincides with a marriage-connected dasha or antardasha.
Shadi kab hogi if no good period shows in the next three years? The reading says so honestly and explains, factor by factor, what is slowing things now and what changes next. Read about remedies for marriage delay and our marriage delay reading.
Does Mangal dosha change the timing? Mangal dosha is mainly a matching question, not a timing one, and it is often cancelled. Check it free on our Mangal dosha page, and read can a manglik marry a non-manglik.
