What it is
Mangal doshaChevvai dosham is about where Mars (Mangal, also called Kuja) sits in the birth chart. When Mars is in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant (lagna) or from the Moon, the chart is said to have the doshadosham.
Because five of the twelve houses count, and from two starting points, a large share of all charts have Mars in one of these places. It is common, not rare.
When it is cancelled
Traditional texts list exceptions that cancel the doshadosham. We check every one of these before saying anything:
- Mars is in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio
- Mars is exalted, in Capricorn
- Mars is in Leo or Aquarius
- Jupiter is in the same sign as Mars
- The Moon is in the same sign as Mars
- Mars in the 2nd house is in Gemini or Virgo
- Mars in the 4th house is in Aries or Scorpio
- Mars in the 7th house is in Cancer or Capricorn
- Mars in the 8th house is in Sagittarius or Pisces
- Mars in the 12th house is in Taurus or Libra
Different traditions list slightly different exceptions. We tell you which rule applied, so you can discuss it with anyone you trust.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean the marriage will fail, or that anyone will come to harm.
- It does not mean you must spend money on an expensive pujapooja.
- It does not mean you can only marry someone who also has it.
When both charts have it
If the bride and groom both have Mangal doshaChevvai dosham, the two charts balance each other. This is called dosha balance (dosha samya)dosha samyam, and it is checked in every proposal check.
