Short answer

Yes, a manglik can marry a non-manglik. First check whether the dosha is cancelled: in our sample, classical exceptions cancel it in more than half of the charts where Mars is in a counted house. A cancelled dosha counts as absent. If it remains in one chart, families weigh it with the full match. No costly puja is needed.

Yes, a manglik can marry a non-manglik. Before anything else, check whether the dosha is cancelled: in a sample of 3000% charts, classical exceptions cancelled it in 58.5% of the charts where Mars sat in a counted house. A cancelled dosha counts as absent, and one that is present in only one chart is weighed with the full match, not treated as an automatic no.

Few words cause more worry in a marriage search than "manglik". Families hear that a match is impossible, that the girl is unlucky for the husband, or that only a costly puja will help. None of this follows from the rule itself. This guide sets out the rule, every cancellation our free checker applies, what happens when both charts are compared, and what the "ends at 28" belief really is.

Kuja dosha, Chevvai dosham and Mangal dosha: same thing?

Yes. Mangal, Kuja and Chevvai are the Hindi, Sanskrit and Tamil names of the same planet, Mars. Mangal dosha (North India), Kuja dosha (Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala) and Chevvai dosham or Sevvai dosham (Tamil Nadu) all name the same check: Mars placed in certain houses of the birth chart. The rules and exceptions on this page apply to all three names.

What makes a chart manglik?

A chart is manglik, or has Mangal dosha, when Mars sits in one of the counted houses. Two questions decide it: which houses, and counted from where.

Which houses. Our checker, like our WhatsApp service, counts the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses. This is the count used in Tamil Nadu and much of South India. Many North Indian references list the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th instead, and some add the 2nd as well. The checker shows the 1st house reading as a separate note, so you can compare it with what your family has been told.

Counted from where. Houses are counted from two points: the lagna (ascendant, which needs the birth time) and the Moon. Mars in a counted house from either one makes the chart count. Some astrologers also count from Venus; the checker shows that as a note too. Without a birth time, only the Moon can be used, which can change the answer. Read matching without a birth time.

123456789101112
The houses that count for Mangal dosha: 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12, counted from the lagna and from the Moon.

Houses are counted whole-sign, with the starting sign as house 1. If the lagna is Mesha and Mars is in Tula, Mars is in the 7th.

How common is Mangal dosha?

Very common, which is the first reason not to fear it. In a sample of 3000% birth charts (random dates from 1950 to 2010, random times, ten birth places across India), calculated with exactly the rules of our checker:

ResultShare
Mars in a counted house, from the lagna or the Moon (of all charts)65.6%
Of those charts, cancelled by a classical exception58.5%
Present and not cancelled (of all charts)27.2%
No Mangal dosha at all (of all charts)34.4%

So roughly one chart in four has the dosha present after the exceptions. A condition that common cannot mean what the frightening stories say. The method is described on our editorial standards page.

Which exceptions cancel Mangal dosha?

These are the exceptions our free checker and our WhatsApp service apply, in this order, before calling a chart manglik. If any one of them applies, the result is "cancelled", and the reason is shown.

#CancellationWhat to look for in the chart
1Mars in its own signMars in Mesha (Aries) or Vrischika (Scorpio)
2Mars exaltedMars in Makara (Capricorn)
3Mars in Simha or KumbhaMars in Simha (Leo) or Kumbha (Aquarius)
4Jupiter with MarsJupiter in the same sign as Mars
5The Moon with Marsthe Moon in the same sign as Mars
6House and sign togethersee the table below

The sixth rule depends on which house Mars is in, counted from the lagna or the Moon:

Mars in houseCancelled when that sign is
2ndMithuna (Gemini) or Kanya (Virgo)
4thMesha (Aries) or Vrischika (Scorpio)
7thKarka (Cancer) or Makara (Capricorn)
8thDhanu (Sagittarius) or Meena (Pisces)
12thVrishabha (Taurus) or Tula (Libra)

Two things families often miss:

  • Five of the twelve signs cancel on their own. Mars in Mesha, Vrischika, Makara, Simha or Kumbha is cancelled whatever the house (rules 1 to 3). Rule 6 adds more, depending on the house.
  • One rule is enough. You do not need several exceptions together.

Exception lists vary between regions and books. Some add Jupiter's aspect on Mars, or Mars in Karka. We apply only the list above, so the answer on the site is always the answer in the chat.

Can a manglik marry a non-manglik?

Yes. This is the order that keeps the decision clear:

  1. Check both charts with exact birth details. Use the free Mangal dosha checker for each person.
  2. Read the result for each: none, cancelled or present. "Cancelled" counts as absent. A manglik chart with a cancellation and a non-manglik chart are, for matching, the same.
  3. Compare the two charts (dosha samya). If both are present, or both absent, they balance. If one is present and the other absent, it is not balanced, which is not the same as rejected.
  4. Read it with the full match. The 10 poruthams or Gun Milan, the 7th house of both charts and the timing of both lives. A proposal is never decided by one factor.

Is Mangal dosha cancelled if both partners are manglik?

Yes. When both charts carry Mangal dosha it balances under dosha samya, though the intensity in the two charts is still compared. A dosha that a classical exception has already cancelled counts as absent, so it is not weighed at all.

How does dosha samya work?

Dosha balance (dosha samya) compares the doshas of the two charts. The proposal check compares Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu dosha in each chart:

Bride's chartGroom's chartResult
Absent or cancelledAbsent or cancelledBalanced: nothing to discuss
PresentPresentBalanced: the two charts balance each other
PresentAbsent or cancelledNot balanced: weighed with the full match
Absent or cancelledPresentNot balanced: weighed with the full match

This is why some families look for a manglik partner for a manglik. It is one good outcome, not the only one. Read dosha samya explained and Rahu-Ketu dosha and marriage.

What does it look like in two real charts?

These two charts were run through the same code as the free checker.

The bride. Lagna Mesha, Moon in Simha, Mars in Tula, Jupiter in Dhanu.

  • From the lagna (Mesha), Tula is the 7th house: counted.
  • From the Moon (Simha), Tula is the 3rd house: not counted.
  • Exceptions: Tula is not Mars's own sign, exaltation, Simha or Kumbha. Jupiter and the Moon are not with Mars. For the 7th house, only Karka or Makara cancel. Result: present.

The groom. Lagna Kanya, Moon in Dhanu, Mars in Makara.

  • From the lagna (Kanya), Makara is the 5th house: not counted.
  • From the Moon (Dhanu), Makara is the 2nd house: counted.
  • Exception: Mars in Makara is exalted (rule 2). Result: cancelled, counts as absent.

So the bride is manglik and the groom, for matching purposes, is not. Dosha balance (dosha samya) says "not balanced", and the dosha is read together with the full match and both charts. Many families go ahead when the rest of the match is good.

Now change one thing: put the groom's Mars in Karka instead. From his Moon in Dhanu, Karka is the 8th house; Karka is not an exception for the 8th, and neither Jupiter nor the Moon is with Mars. His result becomes present, both charts carry the dosha, and dosha balance (dosha samya) says balanced. One planet in a different sign changes the whole answer, which is why we always ask for exact birth details.

Is Mangal dosha cancelled after 28?

You will often hear that Mangal dosha "ends at 28", or after 32. We checked this before writing this guide:

  • The rules we apply have no age rule. The cancellation list above, which our checker and our WhatsApp service use, does not change with age.
  • We did not find an age rule in the classical texts we consulted for this guide, listed under Sources below.
  • The belief is often explained by a separate popular idea, that each planet "matures" at a certain age, with Mars given 28. That idea is about planets in general, not a rule for cancelling Mangal dosha in marriage matching.

So we do not apply it, and we label it plainly as a belief. If your family follows it, that is your choice. We would rather tell you which rule actually applies in your chart than offer a date that may not be true. Marrying later is also not a remedy in itself; if marriage is getting delayed, that is a separate question, covered in marriage delay in astrology.

What about remedies and pujas?

No costly puja is needed to decide a proposal. Tradition's own cancellations come first, and they need nothing. Rituals such as kumbh vivah are a matter of family belief, not a condition of the rule. If a simple prayer or a temple visit of your choice brings peace of mind, that is enough. Navatara does not sell pujas, and nothing you read here is meant to make you afraid.

What can Mangal dosha not tell you?

Mangal dosha is guidance, not a guarantee of anything, good or bad. It is one factor in a horoscope, and a horoscope is one input in a marriage decision, alongside the two people, their families and their values. Different astrologers count houses and exceptions differently, so two answers can both be "correct" by their own rules. Ask which rules were used. Ours are stated above, in full.

What should you do next?

  1. Run the free Mangal dosha checker for each person, with date, exact time and place of birth. If you do not know your star, the birth star finder helps.
  2. If either result is "present", check the full match: free kundli matching, and read how many gunas should match.
  3. For a real proposal, send both horoscopes or birth details to your personal astrologer on WhatsApp. You get Mangal dosha in both charts with the reasons, dosha balance (dosha samya), the 10 poruthams, Rajju and Vedha, and a clear answer. No need to go anywhere. Talking first is free and you pay only when sure: a proposal check is ₹199, all taxes included (see all prices). Read checking a proposal horoscope for what to send.

What else do families ask?

Kya manglik ladki ki shadi non-manglik ladke se ho sakti hai? Haan, ho sakti hai. First check whether her dosha is cancelled; if it is, it counts as absent. If it is present and his is not, the full match decides. The same applies to a manglik boy.

Manglik ladki se shadi karne se pati ko nuksan hota hai kya? No. This belief has hurt many families. The dosha is a position of Mars, it is as common in men as in women, and it is often cancelled. No rule we apply says a manglik woman harms her husband.

Kya 28 saal ke baad mangal dosha khatam ho jata hai? The cancellation rules we apply contain no age rule, and we did not find one in the classical texts we consulted. We treat it as a popular belief.

Should a manglik only marry a manglik? It is not required. Two charts that both have it balance each other, but when one chart's dosha is cancelled, or the full match is strong, a non-manglik partner is fine by these rules.

Chevvai dosham ulla pennai thirumanam seyyalama? Yes. Chevvai dosham is the Tamil name for the same dosha, and the same rules and exceptions apply. Read this guide in Tamil from the language menu.

Does Mangal dosha matter in a love marriage? The rule is the same. Many families still check it; read is kundli matching necessary?
