Short answer
Kundli matching is not required by law or by any single religious rule; it is a family tradition. It compares two birth charts for temperament, closeness, family welfare and timing, and helps a family decide calmly. It cannot measure character, consent or love, so in a love marriage use it as guidance, not a veto.

No, kundli matching is not compulsory: no Indian marriage law asks for it, and many happy couples never do it. It is a family tradition that compares two birth charts for temperament, closeness, family welfare and timing. In a love marriage it works best as calm guidance for the family, never as a verdict on a relationship that already exists.
Kundli matching (called Gun Milan in North India and porutham in South India) is the comparison of the bride's and groom's birth charts before marriage, starting with the two birth stars. Whether you need it depends on what your family believes, which system it follows, and what you want the check to do for you. Here is an honest account from both sides.
Is kundli matching required for marriage in India?
Not legally. A Hindu marriage is valid under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 when its conditions are met (the groom at least 21 and the bride at least 18, both able to give valid consent, no living spouse, not within the prohibited degrees of relationship) and a customary ceremony of either family is performed. A civil marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954 needs notice to the Marriage Officer, a 30-day notice period and three witnesses. Neither law mentions horoscopes.
Matching is a custom, and customs differ. Many families in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Hindi-speaking states check horoscopes before fixing an arranged marriage. Others check only the birth stars, some check only for Mangal dosha, and many families do not check at all. None of these is the single correct practice.
What does kundli matching actually measure?
Two traditions are used across India, and both look at the Moon at birth, which is why the birth star (nakshatra) and Moon sign (rashi) matter most.
| What is checked | System | What tradition reads it for |
|---|---|---|
| The 10 poruthams (Dinam to Vedhai) | South Indian | Health, temperament, family growth, closeness, long life of the marriage; Rajju and Vedha must pass |
| Ashtakoota Gun Milan (36 points) | North Indian | Eight kootas from Varna to Nadi; 18 of 36 is the usual minimum; Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight |
| Mangal dosha and Rahu-Ketu (sarpa) dosha | Both | Mars or Rahu-Ketu in the houses that give the dosha, and whether the two charts balance (dosha balance (dosha samya)) |
| The 7th house and its lord | Both (full chart) | The marriage itself, as read from the whole chart |
| Timing (dasha, Guru bala) | Both (full chart) | Whether the coming years support marriage in both lives |
The first two rows need only the two birth stars, which come from the date and place of birth (plus the time if the Moon changed star that day). The last three need both full charts with birth times. The details are in the 10 poruthams explained, Ashtakoota Gun Milan explained and Gun Milan or 10 poruthams?.
What can matching not tell you?
This is the part that is rarely said plainly. A horoscope match describes tendencies in the classical texts. It does not, and cannot, tell you:
- Character. Honesty, kindness, how someone treats others when things go wrong. These are learned by knowing a person, not by reading two stars.
- Consent. Whether both people truly want the marriage. That is the first condition of any marriage, and no chart can stand in for it.
- Life compatibility. Shared values, money habits, where you will live, children, careers, how the two families get along day to day.
- The future with certainty. A good score is not a promise of happiness, and a weak score is not a prediction of failure. Matching is guidance, not a guarantee.
Even inside the tradition, one failed check is not the end of the story: the classical texts list cancellations for Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha, and a careful reading looks at both whole charts before advising. Matching is one input to a family's decision, not a mechanical rule. That is the honest place to keep it.
How do families use matching in a love marriage?
In an arranged marriage, matching is often a first filter between two families who do not yet know each other. In a love marriage the order is reversed: the two people have already chosen each other, and the question becomes how the families can feel settled about it. In practice, families tend to use it in one of four ways:
- As reassurance. The stars match well, the elders relax, and the conversation moves on to the wedding.
- As a list of things to look at. A weak point (say Rajju, Nadi or Mangal dosha) is noted, and the full charts are read to see whether it is cancelled or balanced.
- To choose a good time. Even when the match is not in question, many families use the charts to pick the wedding muhurat and to see which years are supportive.
- Not at all. Some families decide that the couple's own choice is enough. That is a legitimate choice too.
What tends to help is agreeing on the purpose before anyone looks at a score. If the family has decided in advance that matching is guidance, a weak score leads to questions, not to a broken engagement.
What does a mixed match result look like?
Here is a worked example: seven of ten poruthams match, yet questions remain. In this illustrative pair, the bride's star is Rohini (Vrishabha) and the groom's is Shravana (Makara); you can check any two stars the same way in the free match check.
| Porutham | Result |
|---|---|
| Dina | Does not match |
| Gana | Matches |
| Mahendra | Matches |
| Stree Deergha | Matches |
| Yoni | Matches |
| Rashi | Matches |
| Rashi Adhipati | Matches |
| Vashya | Does not match |
| Rajju (must match) | Does not match |
| Vedha (must match) | Matches |
| Total | 7 of 10 poruthams match · Not recommended |
Seven of the ten poruthams match, which sounds good. But both stars are in the neck (Kanta) Rajju group, so Rajju fails, and on the usual South Indian rule the pair is not recommended on the stars alone. Some traditions accept exceptions to Rajju in particular cases, which is one more reason to read the full charts.
The North Indian check for the same pair:
| Koota | What it looks at | Points | Out of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | Spiritual outlook | 1 | 1 |
| Vashya | Mutual influence | 1 | 2 |
| Tara | Health and well-being (birth-star count) | 3 | 3 |
| Yoni | Physical and emotional closeness | 2 | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Friendship of the Moon-sign lords | 5 | 5 |
| Gana | Temperament | 6 | 6 |
| Bhakoot | Moon-sign distance: family welfare | 0 | 7 |
| Nadi | Health of the couple and children | 0 | 8 |
| Total | 18 | 36 |
- Vashya: this star crosses the middle of its sign, so the exact degree can change the group.
- Bhakoot dosha present, traditionally cancelled because the two rasi lords are natural friends.
The total is 18 of 36, exactly the usual minimum, so on the total alone the pair passes. But both stars are Antya nadi, so Nadi scores zero, which is read as a dosha whatever the total. Bhakoot also scores zero, because Makara is the 9th sign from Vrishabha (a 5 and 9 pair); that dosha is traditionally cancelled because Venus and Saturn, the lords of the two signs, are natural friends.
For a couple who already love each other, this is the moment to stay calm. The stars alone have raised two questions (Rajju and Nadi). They have not answered them. This is exactly when families read both full charts: the 7th house, Mangal dosha in both charts, dosha balance (dosha samya), and the timing of both lives. Many families go ahead after that full reading; some choose a remedy their tradition recommends; a few decide differently. The point is that the decision is made with the whole picture, not on one line of a table. Read more in Rajju and Vedha and Nadi dosha.
When is the full check of both charts worth it?
A free star-match check is enough for curiosity. A full reading of both horoscopes is worth it when:
- Your family follows matching and the elders want an answer they can trust before giving their blessing.
- A star check shows a gate failing: Rajju or Vedha in the poruthams, or a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot in Gun Milan.
- One of you has Mangal dosha and you want to know whether the other chart balances it. See Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik? and the free Mangal dosha check.
- The wedding keeps being postponed and the family wonders about timing. See marriage delay in astrology.
- The two families follow different systems and the results seem to disagree.
If you do not know a birth star, the free birth star finder works it out from the date and place. If the birth time is unknown, read matching without birth time. For an arranged proposal, the order of checks is set out in how to check a proposal's horoscope.

What else do couples and families ask?
Is kundli matching necessary for a love marriage? No. It is a tradition, not a requirement. Many couples do it to give their families peace of mind; many do not. If you do it, agree first that it is guidance, not a veto.
Can we marry if our kundlis do not match? Yes. The law does not ask for a match, and many families go ahead after reading both full charts, because a failing star check is often cancelled or balanced elsewhere. Decide with the whole picture.
What if only a few gunas match? A low total matters less than where the points were lost. A zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is read as a dosha, and each has classical cancellations. See how many gunas should match.
Does a good match guarantee a happy marriage? No. Matching describes traditional tendencies. Respect, consent and the effort of two people matter more than any score.
Do we need birth times for matching? Not for the star checks (poruthams or Gun Milan), which use the Moon's star, unless the Moon changed star on the day of birth. The full chart, the 7th house and Mangal dosha need birth times.
Is there a remedy if the match is weak? Tradition offers remedies for specific doshas, and many weak points are cancelled in the full charts before any remedy is considered. Read dosha balance between two charts and can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
