When a proposal arrives, most families want to know one thing first: does it match? Among the 10 traditional matching checks (Dasha Koota)the 10 poruthams, two carry special weight. They are Rajju and VedhaVedhai. Many families will not go ahead if either one fails, however well the rest matches.
This guide explains both, lists the stars involved, and shows how Navatara uses them.
A quick word on how matching works
Matching starts from the two birth stars (nakshatras). There are 27 stars, and each person has one, set by where the Moon was at the moment of birth. Most checks count from the bride's star to the groom's star.
Rajju and VedhaVedhai are simpler. They only ask whether the two stars sit well together. Because they depend on the birth stars alone, they can be answered even when the birth time is not known.
What Rajju is
The 27 stars are divided into five Rajju groups. Each group is named after a part of the body, from head to feet. The rule is simple: the bride and groom should not be in the same Rajju group.
Rajju is traditionally read as the check for the long life and strength of the marriage itself. Older texts attach a particular worry to each group. Those are traditional cautions, not predictions, and there is no need to carry them as fears.
The five Rajju groups
- Siro (head): Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
- Kanta (neck): Rohini, Ardra, Hasta, Swati, Shravana, Shatabhisha
- Udara (stomach): Krittika, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada
- Kati (waist): Bharani, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada
- Pada (feet): Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Revati
To check, find both stars in this list. If they are in different groups, Rajju matches. If they are in the same group, it does not.
One point surprises many families. When the bride and groom have the same birth star, they are in the same group, so Rajju does not match in Navatara's check.
What VedhaVedhai is
VedhaVedhai means obstruction. Certain stars are said to strike each other, and a couple with such a pair is traditionally thought to meet repeated obstacles together. The rule: the two stars should not form a VedhaVedhai pair.
The VedhaVedhai pairs
- Ashwini and Jyeshtha
- Bharani and Anuradha
- Krittika and Vishakha
- Rohini and Swati
- Ardra and Shravana
- Punarvasu and Uttara Ashadha
- Pushya and Purva Ashadha
- Ashlesha and Mula
- Magha and Revati
- Purva Phalguni and Uttara Bhadrapada
- Uttara Phalguni and Purva Bhadrapada
- Hasta and Shatabhisha
- Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta: any two of these three
The last line works a little differently. These three stars all form VedhaVedhai with each other, so any pairing among them fails. They are also the three stars of Siro Rajju, so such a pair fails Rajju as well.
If your two stars are not a pair in this list, VedhaVedhai matches.
Why many families treat them as non-negotiable
The other eight checks describe how comfortable the marriage may be: temperament, affection, the growth of the family, harmony between the two Moon signs. A weaker result in one of them can be balanced by strength in another.
Rajju and VedhaVedhai are seen differently. Tradition reads them as being about the bond itself, not its comforts. That is why many families, and many astrologersjothidars, treat them as a gate: if either fails, they do not count the rest.
Some traditions accept exceptions to Rajju in particular cases. Navatara takes the careful path that most families expect:
- If Rajju or VedhaVedhai fails, the proposal is not recommended, whatever the other results.
- If both pass and 7 or more of the 10 checks match, the match is good.
- If both pass and 5 or 6 match, it is average, and you are told which checks are weaker.
Either way, you see every check and its reason, so you can discuss it with your family or with anyone you trust.
What these checks cannot tell you
A star match is an important start, but it is not the whole picture. It does not look at Mangal doshaChevvai dosham, Kaal Sarp (Rahu-Ketu) doshaRahu-Ketu (sarpa) dosham or the running periods in each chart. For that, both full kundlisjathagams are compared, including dosha balance (dosha samya)dosha samyam.
And beyond any chart, what the two families know of the two people matters a great deal. A match is guidance for a decision, never a verdict on anyone.
