Short answer
Nadi dosha means the bride's and groom's birth stars belong to the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), so the Nadi koota scores 0 of 8 in Gun Milan. Muhurta Chintamani cancels it in three cases: different stars in the same Moon sign, the same star in different Moon signs, or the same star in different padas.

Nadi dosha means the bride and groom were born under birth stars (nakshatras) of the same nadi, so the Nadi koota of Gun Milan scores 0 instead of 8. It is common: one pair of birth stars in three has it, simply because each nadi holds 9 of the 27 stars. Tradition itself cancels it in three exact situations, and the 10 poruthams of South India do not include it, so it should never end a proposal on its own.
What is Nadi dosha?
Gun Milan (Ashtakoota), the method most used in North India, compares two birth charts through eight kootas worth 36 points in total. Nadi is the last and the largest of them, worth 8 points. Each birth star (nakshatra) belongs to one of three nadis. When both stars are in the same nadi, Nadi scores 0 and the match is said to have Nadi dosha. When they are in different nadis, Nadi scores the full 8.
Tradition reads Nadi for the physical constitution of the couple and the health of their children. The three nadis are commonly linked with the three doshas of Ayurveda: Adi with vata, Madhya with pitta and Antya with kapha. The idea is that two people of the same constitution are too alike. This is a traditional caution, not a medical finding.
Which stars belong to which nadi?
The nadis run along the zodiac in a fixed, repeating pattern: Adi, Madhya, Antya, Antya, Madhya, Adi, and again from the start. That gives each nadi exactly 9 stars.

How common is Nadi dosha?
Exactly one star pair in three shares a nadi, and that is true by construction, not by observation. Whatever the bride's star, 9 of the 27 possible groom stars are in her nadi, and 9 out of 27 is one third.
We checked it the long way as well. Pairing every birth-star quarter (pada) with every other gives 11,664 bride and groom pairs, and 33.3% of them have Nadi dosha. That is why Nadi is one of the most common reasons a Gun Milan total looks lower than a family expected. Because it is so common, treating it as rare bad luck is a mistake. It is one of the ordinary outcomes of the rule.
When is Nadi dosha cancelled?
Muhurta Chintamani, the classical text on auspicious timing, in its chapter on marriage, sets Nadi dosha aside in three situations. Our free check applies exactly these three.
- Different stars, same Moon sign. Both Moons are in the same rashi, but the stars differ.
- Same star, different Moon signs. This can only happen with the nine stars that span two signs (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada), for example Krittika (Mesha or Vrishabha) or Punarvasu (Mithuna or Karka).
- Same star, different padas. Each star has four padas (quarters). The same star in a different pada cancels the dosha. Only the exact Moon positions in both full kundlis can show it.
How often does each cancellation apply?
We counted all 3,888 pada pairs with Nadi dosha, using the same code as our free check. Rules 2 and 3 overlap: the same star in two different signs is always in two different padas as well, so rule 2 is really a special case of rule 3. Such pairs are counted once, under rule 2.
| Situation | Pairs | Share of Nadi dosha pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Different stars, same Moon sign (rule 1) | 144 | 3.7% |
| Same star, different Moon signs (rule 2) | 60 | 1.5% |
| Same star and sign, different padas (rule 3) | 264 | 6.8% |
| Cancelled by one of the three rules | 468 | 12% |
| Same star, same pada (not cancelled) | 108 | 2.8% |
| Different stars, different Moon signs (not cancelled) | 3,312 | 85.2% |
So most Nadi dosha is not cancelled by these rules. Over all 11,664 pairs, about 29% carry Nadi dosha with no classical cancellation.
Two facts from this count are worth knowing:
- Only six pairs of different stars can ever cancel by sharing a Moon sign: Krittika and Rohini (Vrishabha), Ardra and Punarvasu (Mithuna), Uttara Phalguni and Hasta (Kanya), Swati and Vishakha (Tula), Uttara Ashadha and Shravana (Makara), and Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (Kumbha). These are neighbouring stars of the same nadi that sit in the same sign.
- If your stars are the same, ask for the padas. Of the 432 same-star pairs, three quarters (324) are cancelled by a different sign or a different pada. A same-star match cannot be judged from the star names alone.
The complete pair-by-pair data is in our star-match file, and the method is on the editorial standards page.
Where do references differ?
Nadi is one of the places where books, families and online calculators disagree the most. The main differences:
- Extra cancellations. Some references add more exceptions, for example when the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet or friends, or a list of particular stars for which Nadi is said not to apply. These lists vary from book to book. We apply only the three rules of Muhurta Chintamani, so the result on the site is always the result in the chat.
- Points added back or not. Some calculators add the 8 points back when a cancellation applies, so the same couple scores 33 on one site and 25 on another. Our check keeps the counted score and shows the cancellation as a note beside it.
- How much weight Nadi carries. Some older texts say the importance of each koota depends on the community. Many families treat an uncancelled Nadi dosha as a firm no; many others weigh it against the whole match. Neither view is wrong; it is a family decision.
- South Indian porutham does not include Nadi. The 10 poruthams used in Tamil Nadu and much of the South have no Nadi check, though some astrologers there look at it as an extra. There, Rajju and Vedha are the checks families treat as essential. A couple can be a good porutham match and still have Nadi dosha in Gun Milan. Read Gun Milan or 10 poruthams? and Rajju and Vedha.
This is why two websites can give the same couple different answers. Before worrying, check which rules each one applied.
How does a cancellation work in a real match?
The bride is Ardra in Mithuna and the groom is Punarvasu, also in Mithuna. Calculated with the same code as our free check:
| Koota | What it looks at | Points | Out of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | Spiritual outlook | 1 | 1 |
| Vashya | Mutual influence | 2 | 2 |
| Tara | Health and well-being (birth-star count) | 3 | 3 |
| Yoni | Physical and emotional closeness | 2 | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Friendship of the Moon-sign lords | 5 | 5 |
| Gana | Temperament | 6 | 6 |
| Bhakoot | Moon-sign distance: family welfare | 7 | 7 |
| Nadi | Health of the couple and children | 0 | 8 |
| Total | 26 | 36 |
- Nadi dosha present, traditionally cancelled because the rasi is the same and the stars differ.
Ardra and Punarvasu are both Adi nadi, so Nadi scores 0 and Nadi dosha is present. The stars differ and the Moon sign is the same, so rule 1 cancels it. The counted total stays 26 of 36; the cancellation is shown as a note, never added as points.
Now put the groom's Moon in the fourth pada of Punarvasu, which falls in Karka. The two birth stars have not changed, but the Moon signs now differ, so the cancellation no longer applies. Mithuna and Karka are also 2/12 apart, which brings Bhakoot dosha, and the total falls to 13.5. One quarter of a star, about 3 degrees of the Moon, changes the whole picture. This is why we always ask for the exact birth time rather than the star name alone.

What does it mean for your marriage?
Nadi dosha is guidance, not a guarantee of anything, good or bad. A sensible order:
- Check whether a cancellation applies. Put both birth stars into the free kundli matching check. It names the rule if one applies.
- If the stars are the same, get the padas. Three quarters of same-star pairs are cancelled once the padas or signs are known. You need both full kundlis for this, or the birth details.
- If it is not cancelled, look at the whole match. Read the total, Bhakoot, both charts and dosha balance (dosha samya) together. See how many gunas should match and dosha samya.
- Keep fear out of it. No costly puja or remedy is needed to decide. If your family wishes to do a simple prayer, that is a personal choice, not a condition.
For a real proposal, send both horoscopes or birth details to your personal astrologer on WhatsApp. You get Nadi, its cancellation if any, the 10 poruthams, Rajju and Vedha, Mangal dosha in both charts and a clear answer with the reasons. Talking first is free, and you pay only when sure: a proposal check is ₹199, all taxes included (see all prices). If marriage itself is getting delayed, the marriage timing reading looks at that separately.
What do families usually ask about Nadi dosha?
Can we marry with Nadi dosha? Many couples do, especially when one of the three classical cancellations applies. If it is not cancelled, families usually weigh it together with the full charts and the rest of the match rather than on its own.
Our stars are the same. Is that always Nadi dosha? Yes, the same star is always the same nadi. It is cancelled if the Moon signs differ or the padas differ, which covers three quarters of same-star pairs. Only the same star in the same pada stays uncancelled. Families also have their own customs about marrying within the same birth star, so ask your elders which one your family follows.
Is Nadi dosha linked to blood group or genetics? There is no established scientific link. Nadi is worked out from the Moon's position at birth; blood group and genes are not. If health is a real concern for the couple, a doctor and medical tests are the right check.
Does Nadi dosha matter if our family follows poruthams? The 10 poruthams do not include Nadi. If your family follows poruthams, Rajju and Vedha are the checks that must pass. See the 10 poruthams explained.
Is a Nadi dosha nivaran puja necessary? Tradition's own cancellations come first, and they need no puja. When the dosha stands, a remedy is a matter of family belief, not a requirement, and it should never be expensive or sold through fear.
Why does one website say Nadi dosha is cancelled and another says it is not? Websites apply different lists of exceptions, and some add the 8 points back while others do not. Ask which rules were applied. Ours are the three of Muhurta Chintamani, stated above.
