Short answer

A genuine astrologer on WhatsApp shows clear prices before you pay, never charges by the minute without telling you, never asks for an OTP or UPI PIN, never asks for puja money to a personal UPI ID, and names a company, address and refund policy you can check. Fear, urgency and ritual payments are scam signs.

Yes, an astrologer on WhatsApp can be safe, if the service shows you its prices before you pay, never runs a per-minute meter on you, never asks for an OTP or UPI PIN, never asks for puja money on a personal UPI ID, and gives a real company name, address, refund policy and a way to delete your data. If any one of those is missing, slow down. This guide shows the scam pattern reported in Indian news, a checklist you can use on any service (including ours), and Navatara's own answer to every point.

WhatsApp is how most Indian families already talk. Asking about a marriage proposal, a kundli match or a delay in marriage from the same app, at home, in your own language, with no need to go anywhere, is a real convenience. A free first chat lets you see whether the answers make sense before you spend anything.

The risk does not come from WhatsApp itself. It comes from the fact that anyone can create a profile, call themselves an astrologer, and message a worried parent. Astrology questions are often asked at anxious moments: a proposal stuck, a marriage delayed, a dosha someone mentioned. Fear makes people pay quickly, and that is exactly what dishonest operators rely on.

What does the common astrology scam on WhatsApp look like?

News reports describe the same pattern again and again. In one case reported in June 2025 (The Tribune; IANS via The Hawk), a woman found a self-described astrologer through his social media profile and contacted him on WhatsApp about personal problems. He first suggested simple home remedies, then said her troubles came from negative energy, and asked for money for rituals he said were being performed in Vrindavan. Over time she transferred nearly ₹3 lakh in several payments. No rituals were done, and he stopped replying. Delhi Police later arrested him after she complained on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

A WhatsApp astrology scam is a con in which someone posing as an astrologer uses fear of a dosha or curse to collect repeated payments for rituals that are never performed. The steps are almost always the same:

  1. A friendly start, often free and very warm.
  2. Fear: a dosha, a curse, "negative energy", a danger to a child or spouse.
  3. Urgency: the puja must be done this week, or it will be too late.
  4. Payment to a personal account or a personal UPI ID, usually in several parts, each "the last one".
  5. New problems, new payments, and finally silence when the money stops.

A second pattern targets the payment itself: a request to "confirm" a payment with an OTP, or a "collect request" that asks you to enter your UPI PIN to "receive" a refund. NPCI's public guidance is plain: the UPI PIN is only for sending money, never for receiving it (Business Standard, July 2025).

How do you check if a WhatsApp astrologer is genuine? A seven-point checklist

Use this on any service before you share money. A genuine one passes every row without you having to push.

AskA genuine serviceA warning sign
1. Are prices clear before I pay?Fixed prices on the website and in the chat, before payment"We will tell you after the reading"
2. Am I charged by the minute? No, or the rate is stated clearly in advanceA meter running while you are kept talking
3. Do they sell pujas or gemstones? No pressure; simple, optional practicesCostly rituals, "guaranteed" results, a deadline
4. Who is the company?Legal name, address, phone and email you can checkOnly a first name and a mobile number
5. Is there a refund policy?Written, with clear conditionsNone, or "no refunds ever"
6. Do they ask for an OTP or UPI PIN?NeverAny request at all
7. Can I delete my data?Yes, with a simple written requestNo answer

Two more habits help: start the chat from the official website rather than a number someone forwarded to you, and never pay to a personal UPI ID for a ritual promised to be done somewhere else.

How does Navatara answer each point on the checklist?

We wrote the checklist so that you can test us with it too.

  1. Prices first. Every price is on our prices page and repeated in the chat before you pay, in INR with all taxes included. The first reading is free; paid readings are ₹99 to ₹999; a porutham check for one proposal is ₹199. One-time payment, no hidden charges, on a secure Cashfree payment page (UPI, cards, net banking).
  2. No per-minute billing. Talk free, for as long as you like. You pay only when you are sure and choose a reading.
  3. No puja or gemstone selling. Remedies, when asked for, are simple and optional, and we earn nothing from them.
  4. Real company details. The company name, address, phone, email and support hours are on our About page, on the contact page and at the bottom of every page.
  5. Written refund terms. A full refund if a paid reading is not delivered within 24 hours, if you were charged twice, or if our mistake used wrong birth details and we cannot correct it. Read the refund policy.
  6. Safe payments. Only through a payment link inside the chat. We never ask for an OTP, a UPI PIN or a card number.
  7. Delete-my-data. Send "Delete my data" in the chat and your details are erased within 7 days. See data deletion and our privacy policy.

How the readings are calculated, and what we will not claim, is set out in how it works and our editorial standards.

What does a scam message look like? A worked "Mangal dosha puja" example

A mother in Pune shares her daughter's birth details with an unknown WhatsApp number. Within an hour she is told the girl has a severe Mangal dosha, the marriage will "break within a year", and a special puja costing ₹21,000 must be done before the next new moon. Payment is to a personal UPI ID.

Run the checklist:

  • Price shown first? No. The cost appeared only after the fear.
  • Puja selling? Yes, with a deadline. Warning sign.
  • Company? Only a first name.
  • Refund policy? None.
  • Personal UPI ID? Yes. Warning sign.

The astrology is also wrong in the way it is presented. Traditional texts treat Mangal (Chevvai) dosha as one factor among many, with well-known conditions that cancel or balance it, including when both partners have it (dosha balance (dosha samya)). In North Indian guna milan (36 gunas across 8 kootas) and South Indian porutham (10 poruthams) alike, a match is judged on the whole picture of both charts, never on one frightening line. A calm look at both charts is the first step, not a costly ritual. You can check it yourself with the free Mangal dosha check, read can a manglik marry a non-manglik, and see how balance works in our dosha samya guide.

The safe response: do not pay, do not argue, keep the screenshots, and get a second opinion where the price is shown first.

What should you never share in a WhatsApp chat?

  • An OTP, of any kind. No genuine astrology service needs it.
  • Your UPI PIN. It is needed only to send money, never to receive it.
  • Card numbers, CVV or bank passwords.
  • Copies of Aadhaar, PAN or bank statements. A kundli needs only the date, time and place of birth.

What should you do if you have already paid someone?

  1. Stop all further payments, however urgent the next message sounds.
  2. Call the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 as soon as possible; quick reports give the best chance of freezing money in transit.
  3. Report it at cybercrime.gov.in.
  4. Inform your bank, and keep screenshots of the chat, the UPI ID and the payment references.

What can astrology honestly promise?

Astrology is guidance, not a guarantee. A good reading explains what the chart shows, how strong each factor is, and what is in your hands. Anyone who guarantees a result in exchange for a payment, or says a marriage will fail unless you pay, is selling fear. Navatara's readings are calculated from your birth details using the same rules as our free tools ([kundli matching], marriage delay, the birth star finder), and they say plainly where the method has limits, for example when the birth time is not known (matching without birth time).

What will Navatara never ask you for?

Navatara is your personal astrologer on WhatsApp, always here for your help, with no need to go anywhere. Talking is free, and you pay only when you are sure. We will never ask for an OTP, a UPI PIN or a card number, never sell a puja or a gemstone, never charge by the minute, and never use fear to make you pay. Our chat starts only from the buttons on this website.

What else do families ask about WhatsApp astrology?

Is it safe to share birth details on WhatsApp? With a service that tells you how the details are used and lets you delete them, yes. Birth details alone cannot move money. Never share OTPs, PINs or ID documents.

Can I chat with an astrologer on WhatsApp for free? With Navatara, yes: asking questions is free, for as long as you like. Paid readings are optional, and their prices are shown before you pay.

Why do scam astrologers ask for money in parts? Small payments feel safer and keep people paying. Clear fixed prices shown first avoid this.

An astrologer says my daughter's marriage will fail unless we do a puja. What should I do? Do not pay under pressure. Ask for both charts to be checked calmly; a second opinion costs nothing. Our guide to checking a proposal horoscope shows what a fair check looks like.

How do I know a message is really from Navatara? Start the chat from the buttons on this website. We never message you first asking for money, and we never ask you to pay a personal UPI ID.

What if I am unhappy with a paid reading? Tell us in the chat. Calculation mistakes are corrected free, and the cases that get a full refund are written in our refund policy.
